Threatened to take me to court, charge me 2 times the amount of my so called debt, told me I had 30 minutes to pay in full

I recieved a letter from CMS stating that I owed a debt. I am a responsible person, and all of my debts are paid. But hey, i could have missed something. So, I got my credit report from all 3 credit bureau's, checked over all my records, and i have no record of a debt in this amount. So, i called CMS to ask them how to dispute a debt, prove its validity, and resolve this issue. The man started yelling at me, told me he would see me IN COURT, that I would have to pay him twice the amount of debt that was owed, plus court costs. I was finally able to get him to tell me that the debt came from from a visa card.in I was a broke-@ss waitress paying off a student loan - there is no way I would have been able to get a credit card. I told the man this, and he again told me that I would be in court, unless i paid the settlement amount, 10% of what was owed right now. I let him know that I was not paying anything until I had validity of the debt, and that I knew I had 30 days to dispute. He said you just disputed it - now i am going to give you 30 minutes to call me back and pay the amount in full or I am going to take you to court. Needless to say, I was upset.

I entered the company's name online, and this site came up. I saw a person who had a similar situation, and the rebuttal was - "your problem is with LVNV, contact them." So I followed that advice. The man who answered the phone at LVNV was very helpful. I explained to him what happened, and what CMS had said. I explained to him that I would gladly pay the debt, if it could be validated as mine - i do not want unresolved debt out there - and even a 1% chance that this debt is mine, I want to find out. He walked me through the dispute process, explained to me that the company would send whatever proof they had once I had followed the process. Then, he went on to let me know that the debt was out of statute as of meaning no court would force me to pay anything on this debt! Cms was absolutely lying! He then gave me a number to call to file a report on CMS, and said that he would file his company's report for such things as well. I am going to follow his advise, file the dispute, and the complaint for CMS. Additionally, I am going to look up other methods of complaint, and let people know what CMS is doing. If anyone out there knows of any other ways to file about this incident - to what athorities, and how to reach them, please let me know. I know flat out that what CMS is doing is illegal - you can never tell a person they have only 30 minutes to settle a debt. Thank you for reading.
