Tried to phone company to return cosmetics, unable to reach anyone, put on hold

Received "free" sample cosmetics. Enclosed information sheet gave phone number to call to acquire a Return Merchandise Authorization #. Called and was unable to reach anyone, was left on hold. Tried at least 10 or 12 times.
The info sheet indicated my credit card would be charged $59.99 at the end of the 14-day trial period (I received package 10 days after initial contact).
I am putting a fraud alert on my credit card account to block this charge.
