Ripoff lied about being student on baseball team earning money for baseball conference in FL

I can't believe I fell for this one. The young male who knocked on my door said the new university (university of california at monterey bay) couldn't afford to pay for their baseball team to travel to FL for a baseball conference. He indicated he played third base and relief pitcher for the team.

He was clean cut, very polite and also told me he lived in one of the cul-de-sacs downt the street. I asked him which one and he told me along with "you probably see my Mom outside with our white Shitzu puppy" all the time. She loves that dog" Also he said, "My Mom and Dad told me I have to do a good deed for everybody that buys a book from me because nothing in life is free." (Ok that really got to my heart) I asked him if this was in any way related to the magazine subscription company that goes door to door. He said, "No Mam".

After writing a check for one book for $40, he asked me not to write anything in the memo section - "My coach has a stamp for this section. If you write in the memo section it disqualifies me for my trip points." Later that evening, I couldn't stop thinking about this purchase. Different inconsistencies kept popping up in my head about our conversation. I revieweed my receipt which indicated "subscriptions, and this salesperson is an independent contractor aka self employed" I googled Quality Subscriptions and found this rip off site with a similar story. I wanted to respond as well.
