Student Travel/Donation Scam Hits L.A.—Buy Fake Books for Fake Travel?

Miscellaneous

On 1/10/07, two 18-ish looking guys came to my door, claiming to live within my general neighborhood. I live in Los Angeles County, in Westlake Village, CA. They said they were selling books to raise money to study acting in London, at the Globe Theatre. They said they were among an elite few who could participate in the acting program, and were homeschooled students chosen from several.

The books offered for sale were targeted to young children, and not of interest to me, but I wanted to help neighborhood kids, since my own older kids often seek donations for sports, scouts, etc. The guys said I could buy books to "donate to St. Jude's Children's Center.

The Company is linked with different charity groups, and we can designate your purchase as a donation." That sounded great, so I purchased a set of four "Look-Find" books for $49.00, and they said they would be donated to St. Jude's.

After making the purchase w/a check, I was suspicious because the receipt from Integrity says it does not accept donations. I went to www.integritysale.com, and emailed the contact given (no phone numbers are listed, and no names; just "contact"). I asked if they will donate the books to St. Jude's, as I was assured. I received an email back the next day, stating that Integrity will not donate to St. Jude, and my order will be cancelled and my check "SHOULD be returned."

I have sent a cancellation notice (within the 3 day period) via certified mail, return receipt requested, and we shall see if I get that check back.

I wonder how many other of my neighbors we as stpid as I was. I feel like a total idiot, especially considering I THINK I am not one!
