Refuse to pay bounus due employee ripoff

Jan through june. Called first half bonus. Myself the employee was let go from the company in august. First half bonus cut off was june. Company let employee go 6 days before the checks were to be given out. Company now says "bonus not considered earned untill paid". I spent 6 months working hard for a bonus that they keep?
