Ripoff we break it you pay for it

My son took his 2000 Ford Focus to Anderson Ford, for a battery replacement and positive cable replacement. The service advisor called and told my son that they might break the alternator if they tryed to remove the cable from the alternator. Son told them if you can't do it, then just replace the end of the cable that connects to the battery. An hour later Anderson Ford calls and says we broke the alternator, that will cost you $440.00 parts and labor. This and the battery, and the cable. Cost total $884.17. After talking to others we have decided to stop payment and let them justify the costs to a judge.
