Ripoff scam

After I applied for equity loan, my lender informed me of a $17 collection charge on my credit report, which I allegedly owed to Mapnad Viatel. I've never heard of them before, so I called them to find out where the charge come from. The first thing they wanted to know was my Social Security number, "to pull my account". After I refused to give them my SS# and offered my name instead, the lady on the other end told me to have a nice day and hung up. Then I went on the Internet and found numerous reports of this scam.
