Magazines Possible Ripoff

I received a phone call advising me I had been selected to receive several free magazines, they then requested I only pay for 1.By the time the call was completed my payments were going to be $49.50 per month. I gave them my card number for the first payment & advised the rest I would prefer a statement, they recorded the conversation. After some thought, I called the next day to the number on the caller id. Someone answer the phone "Hello this is Teresa" & I asked is this Community Reading Club & she said "Who wants to know?" I told her I wanted to cancel the subscription & she told me I would have to wait until I received my packet of info before I could cancel. I received the packet a day later & called the 800 number. I received a call back from a very pushy person advising me I had made a verbal commitment & they had already paid the money upfront to the other publishers $445.00 for me to receive the magazines there was no way I could cancel. I politely told her that my letter stated I could cancel at anytime via a written letter with no further obligation & that I had also mailed a letter that day. I went on to tell her if they didn't cancel my subscription I would be contacting the Attorney Generals office. I received a call from the supervisor today of their customer service department & my subscription has been cancelled. I didn't get my up front payment back though & was advised I would probably receive magazines for 3-6 months but then that would be it.
