Classmates - Homeworks Plus
Ripoff, automatic renewal, unauthorized charges

A couple of weeks ago I was going over my bank statement when I noticed two mysterious charges for $9.95. Since I'd never heard of the company Homeworks Plus, which made the charges, I called the number on my statement to have these charges removed. The person at Homeworks Plus did agree to have both charges removed (I had to speak to a supervisor to have the first one removed, it being a month or so old) and to my suprise they did refund my account within a few days.

In the mean time, I had also contacted my bank to dispute the charge as well. When I asked the person at Homeworks Plus how they had gotten my account info I was told that when I had enrolled in a membership with Classmates.com, I had clicked "yes" to something asking if I wanted their "services".

I know this is untrue, I have a very effective pop-up killer and I NEVER respond to spam. It's obvious that Classmates.com is in cahoots with these people and that they use some hidden authorization to get you to agree to the "services" of Homeworks Plus.

I wrote CLassmates informing them of this shady company and they responded saying they'd have Homeworks remove the charge. They added that I had in fact agreed to have my account debited by Homeworks. Once the money was credited to my account I thought that was the end of it.

Wrong!

The other day I gor an e-mail from the folks at CLassmates.com thanking me for renewing my stupid $15 membership. I have sent them several e-mails not only wishing to cancel my wonderful automatic renewal but also to have my account credited for the $15. So far, no response.

I plan on contacting my bank tomorrow to dispute this but I want to know if there's anything else we can do regarding Classmates.com and Homeworks Plus, I have filed a complaint with the FTC but haven't heard from them.
