Miscellaneous

A very nice young man knocked on our door and said he was a walk-on for the Univ. Of South Carolina in Columbia, SC and was raising money for books and fees. He asked me to purchase children's books which would be sent to the local children's hospital. After my husband and I talked with him at length, I gave him a check but I should have been suspicious when he said to make it payable for cash. He also said if we bought 3 books that the company would send us 4 free tickets to the Carolina/Clemson game. Another "I should have known." I looked up "Back A Winner" on the Internet and saw it was a scam. I called my bank and put a stop payment on my check and went down to the bank immediately to insure my account would not be charged. I talked with my city police dept. And they could not report a crime unless I actually lost the money, but he would alert the other officers to be on the lookout for the young man. I used to criticize "old people" for getting scammed, but since I'm retired I suppose I was actually criticizing myself—ha! Thankfully I caught it in time. Beware!!!
