Flight cancellation

Our flight from London to New York no. UA28 on 27th August was cancelled without notice. We arrived at Heathrow at 8.00am for the flight at 10.05 but were told that we could only get on the 6.00pm flight. We were tired and exhausted when we finally boarded the plane after spending 10 hours at Heathrow. We also lost a day in New York because of the delay. We picked up a phototcopy of the Description of your Rights which states if a flight is cancelled we are entitled to compensation so considering the 8 hour delay we feel we are due compensation.
