I recieved a telemarketing call about 3 weeks ago. It was from a hispanic female representative of "First National Merchantcard".in the beginning of the call, she had stated she got my information over the internet. I had previously filled out some offers on freebies.com. She was telling me I was approved for 6500.00 credit limit from there company. She even went as far as to give me the callback number if at anytime I decided to cancel.
We went over all my demographic information, and she wanted my account number, just to "verify". After our conversation was over, she requested I stay on the line to listen to a recording and answer "yes" or "no" to a series of questions.including my name is, my address is, I agree to the terms of the card, etc. At the very end of the recording, it says my acct will charged 299.99 on 12-15.
I immediately called the 800 # back to find that it was a bogus number, I dialed it 20 times and never could get it to ring. I then called my bank immediately. They said there was nothing they could do unless the do the exact name of the company. They could however, make a stop payment on the amount of 299.99 but advised me it would be just as easy for the fraudulent company to change the amount of a draft and still be able to withdraw funds from my acct.
I recieved the packet in the mail, and used the number 1-800-277-7056, to try and reach someone to cancel. But the only options the recording gives you is to press 1 to activate card, or press 9 to disconnect the call.
