Miscellaneous

I was having some Yahoo email problems and decided to contact Yahoo for help. From there my my experience very closely mirrors what happened as described in complaint # 213978.

When I contacted Yahoo support, (800) 941-7590, I was connected to tech support who asked to remotely access my computer using logmein123.com. I granted access and the tech pulled up a "Sticky Note" on my computer showing that I had several unauthorized foreign logons to my computer on specific dates starting back in Feb.

He then outlined my options. He told me I could take my computer to Best Buy or Staples to get "cleaned" (I'm not sure if that's the exact word he used) which would take a couple of days or sign up with them so they could fix my computer remotely in a couple of hours. He said since I had 2 computers, I needed to have both checked and cleaned.

I authorized the charge for them to cover my 2 computers for 2 years at a total cost of $599.98.

They ran various programs on both computers which took several hours. At the end they said both my computers were OK and ready to be used. I didn't watch everything they did, but saw that among other thinkgs they were removing temp files from various directories. For example, one program they ran was cclean.

Later I realized I should have been more suspicious about this company and found complaints against them on your website. I called them at their number (1-800-941-7590) to say I wanted my money back. They said that I shouldn't think they were a scam, saying that if they were running a scam they wouldn't be there to help and answer my phone calls whenever I called. I didn't know what to think.

However, I later remembered that when their tech person showed me the "sticky note" with specific dates on which my computer had been hacked the first date he highlighted was one in which my computer had been turned off - I was traveling out the country and had turned off all my computers. That's why I am now convinced that their service is a scam. My computer could not have been hacked on that date, or any time within that time period.

Which the first date he showed me

Where he outlined my options to resolve my computer violation. He noted that Mac would take 5-7 days and would cost $350 (among other details) OR that for $300 and 1-2 hours of remote access, they could fix all my computer issues. I was leery and asked if he worked for Yahoo, which is who I originally believed I had called. He said "Yes" and I authorized the charge. Today (10 days later) at the Apple Store, I was informed that I had likely been scammed. I contacted the same number (Global Tech Help) and demanded my money back, invoking their "100% satisfaction guarantee". They agreed to refund my money (after first suggesting that they refund $200 of the $300) so we'll see. I also requested that they send me an email to confirm the refund.
