I found a charge of $31.46 for "WIMACTL*88847608" on my bank statement for an unsuccessful credit-card phone call I tried to make from a pay phone at a deserted Amtrak drop-off platform in Provo, Utah. I only remember being incredibly frustrated, as I was standing in a lightning storm at about 4:30 A.M. With a dead cell phone, trying to call a taxi, and the pay phone was giving me a lot of trouble — I spent only a couple of minutes trying, but I couldn't connect to the taxi service and ended up spending a couple of hours huddling under someone's porch overhang in rain and lightning until daylight. As 88847608 is not a valid phone number, I eventually had to do some research to find out who this company is and get a working number to call them; when I did, I was informed that I could have pressed some "Option 3" in a recording when I was trying to make the call (??!) that would have warned me about exorbitant charges I was incurring in my desperate attempt to use that phone. I was also told that their records show my call was successful; plus, I'd had only 90 days to dispute the fraudulent charge, so too bad. I doubt that this company would have compensated me for the $31.46 at any time — let alone the time and stress this has caused me, due also to the fact that I have very limited funds these days — but leaving two digits out of your phone number pretty much guarantees a customer isn't going to call customer service about a charge when it's first noticed. WiMacTel's practices and tactics aren't just disingenuous and exploitative; they're fraud. Pay us back, with damages, WiMacTel. You are guilty.
