Mary adams Check scam alert! Tried to scam me but didn't work

I received a letter stating that I was chosen to be a beneficiary of an unclaimed settlement for the amount of $ 80,000. And inclosed was a check for $1,255.55 and I was told to deposit it, not cash it (red flag there). I also had to call a Mary Adams for further instructions (red flag). And when I called them after receiving the letter in the mail, she said congratulations you won the November drawling from PCH... Well I called Publishers Clareing House, and they said it wasn't from them, that it was a fraud...
