CompUSA
Ripoff Failed to repair my computer to my liking

Internet & Web

I took my machine to CompUSA in Brandon Florida to have a few errors and internet issues addressed. After leaving my machine at their store for 5 days I received a call from them telling me that it was going to cost me $100 to clean off the hard drive and reinstall WindowsXP. I asked if anything else could be done - they told me it was beyond repair.

I asked if they could save my email and some documents for me - they said it would be an additional $100 to backup the entire hard drive. They also told me that I had a 40 gig hard drive that was 75% used and I would have to buy a new hard drive to backup my data to a folder on the hard drive seeing that my current data and the new install of WindowsXP wouldn't fit on the same hard drive. That took my estimated bill to $200 in labor and $90 for a new hard drive. They estimated it would take another 2 days to complete the needed repairs. I told them I would think about it and call them back.

I called them next day and asked them how much I owed if I just picked up the machine. They wanted to charge me a $45 bench fee. I went by the store and spoke to them about the current changes and they finally agreed to drop the changes and gave me my machine back.

My problem isn't with the bench fee they wanted to change me. It's with the fact that I took my machine to Custom Design Computers and got a free repair estimate and had the problems resolved for $70. It took them less than two days and it's been working error free for over 30 days now.

I've spoken to others that have had the same type of experience at CompUSA. Seems that they've found the quickest, and possibly the most profitable, way to resolve error messages is to clean off the hard drive. Custom Design Computers stepped up and completed the needed work while being honest and efficient.
