Earthlink attempted to bill my credit card, which they were unable to do, at which point they disconnected my service. This had happened before, I would get the card current, call & tell them to run the card through, service would be back up.

The last time it happened, I had decided stop using that card. Because billing was always prior to monthly use, and because THEY had disconnected me, I believed the matter to be over and no one informed me in any way to the contrary... Until a bill appeared for two months worth of service. They presented the charge as a "service" to their clients: they kept the account "active" for that period - without internet service - and then billed me for stated service that I had not agreed to.

But wait, according to them, I had agreed to this "service" and the bill for stated service by agreeing to purchase internet service from them. The only way to avoid such "service" and "charge" was to send them a certified letter stating I wished to cancel my service. Evidently, their own disconnecting of my service wasn't good enough to avoid charging me for not receiving a certified letter telling them I wished for them to do what they had already done. Make sense? Of course it doesn't, it's not suppose to. It is supposed to be a way of extorting money from users who have the audacity to discontinue service.

I told them I had never authorized the charge and to remove it from their records. They refused, insisting I owed the money. I told them not to call me anymore. They began calling with prerecorded messages every night, stating "call this number". Haven't yet, and the odds of that ever happening are... Hmmm, lets see... Zero.
