Amazon Marketplace Policies Make Sellers Succeptible to Fraud

Internet & Web

Amazon.com's treatment of individuals who sell items in its Marketplace is atrocious, lacking any protection against buyer fraud. The assumption seems to be that all buyers are in the right and all sellers, if in a dispute, are crooks. Basically, all a buyer has to do is submit a claim to Amazon stating that the item they received isn't in the condition advertised, and Amazon will take their word for it and issue a refund out of the seller's account (the seller is given a nominal chance to explain his side, but the money is then taken out without notification). To add insult to injury, as the link below states, the buyer isn't even obliged to return the item! So, I can buy something, lie that it was broken, submit a claim, get a refund, and keep the "broken" item. Amazon doesn't care because they already have pocketed their commission, so they push off all responsibility on the seller, presumably because they don't want to alienate buyers who frequent their site. (Which is short-sighted, given they make money from seller as well.)
