Ripoff trying to recharge for cancellations 7 months later & the Internet

In March I made reservations through this internet site for a family vacation to Florida. Upon further investigating, I decided to book the entire vacation through a different site (both air & hotel togther).in order to receive a cancellation number, I needed to call in oder to get it, which I did the very next day.
Now, 8 months later, I receive a notice in the mail stating that I owed them money for this reservation I had cancelled. They also stated they had tried to contact me on previous occasions, which I had not received anything previously in the mail, or any messages on my answering machine.
Now they are threatening to turn it over to a professional collection agency, which will now affect my credit report. Upon trying to contact them by telephone, noone answered, but left a message. Still heard nothing.
I then emailed them with the situation, even giving them the internal booking number listed on their notice, the reply I received was that they could not find any information based upon what I had supplied them. How could they not find the information they had sent me! My advise, use a travel agent or more widely advertised companies!
