Bidz.com
Deceptive auction listings

Internet & Web

I successfully bid on two Oniss watches on Bidz.com. When I went to check out, I found that both were considered "gifts" according to the category they were in on the checkout page. I called and asked about this. There was nothing in the pictures (scrolling all the way to the bottom) nor in the text that said these two watches were gift items. The person who took my call said that a single watch from that company (Oniss) came in a very large box making them gifts because of the "size of the box". He did not know at what size a single watch becomes a gift.

I sent them email complaining about the lack of any hint that the watches were "gifts" and were therefore different from the other watches I bought from them. I notice that they now include a statement at the bottom of _some_ of the online descriptions — way at the bottom of the listing. It says: "There is a limit of 3 gift items per order due to size restrictions." Notice that it does not say that the item on that page IS a gift item. The difference is that the shipping cost per item is more for 3 gifts than for a list of items (30 for jewelry). I expected the 2 watches to be included in the list of other items I bought.

I have received at least one very large box from Bidz that would easily accommodate other items I bought that Bidz.com claimed were "gift" items. At least those had more than just a watch in the "gift" box. The Oniss "gifts" were just watches. Nothing else.

So they are still not accurate enough for a buyer to be sure about what is a gift and what is not. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. I am going to take the advice of another poster here and send letters of complaint to the State and the FTC.
