Buyer Returned Empty Box With Tracking, Refund Issued Anyway

I recently had an experience with theft through my PayPal account, so I thought I would share this with the rest of the users here so they do not fall for the same scam!

I am an eBay seller. I sold an item, a car driver's window, which is a large item.

I made a shipping mistake and sent the winning bidder the wrong window. Needless to say, he was very upset. I did not blame him, but I told him to return the item to me and I would refund his money, even though the auction states NO RETURNS. It was my mistake and I was going to fix it, because that is the type of seller I am. Honest!

He responded that he wanted me to send him money to return it. I said no. What store gives you money BEFORE you return their item? I said again, send me the item back and I will refund you in full. He said no and proceeded to file a dispute with PayPal.

We each said the same thing in the dispute. Finally, PayPal gave him 15 days to return the item, otherwise the dispute would be closed. The buyer ONLY has to supply PayPal with the tracking number, and when the shipping company states it was returned, PayPal automatically refunds the buyer! So that is what he did. He grabbed a small box, packed it with his local newspaper for shipping, paid $1.95 for postage, and gave PayPal the tracking number.

Here is the problem. This buyer sent me a small EMPTY box! He did NOT return the item that was sold to him. He instead kept it and got his refund back from PayPal.

I emailed PayPal twice with this information before they refunded this buyer, but they gave him the money anyway. NOW he has the item AND the money back. I think that is called stealing, isn't it? Anyway, now PayPal is trying to wash their hands of it all and wants me to file a police report with my local authorities. All the while, this buyer gets away with breaking the law! And if he did it once, he will do it again.

So be careful, sellers who use PayPal. This little "loophole" PayPal has with its dispute refund system can be taken advantage of by dishonest people!

PayPal needs to contact the seller FIRST before ANY refund is given. Period! Their existing refund system is too easy to abuse. Don't let it happen to YOU!
