Ripoff, BYOA billing, Free # months Internet fraudulent ripoff business Herndon, VA

On January 13, I contacted AOL to cancel my Internet Account after 2 or 3 years of loyal usage. First of all, it is very difficult to contact a person to discontinue service, a feature they do not like to offer. After finally getting a human being, I told them that we were having cable internet installed, and would like to cancel my account. Their rep told me to use AOL for three months "FREE" to determine if I wanted to use them for provider instead of the cable company.

Sounded fair enough. However, yesterday my wife asked, "What is the $165 charge on our credit card from AOL?" Well, it turns out they have been billing me $2.95 PER MINUTE after signing on the internet and clicking on a box that says BYOA telephone services. (This window pops up when you sign on like a Banner Ad which sounds like a internet telephone service.

They have been billing me $14.95 a month plus $2.95 per minute since telling me to use FREE Internet for 3 months.

I contacted AOL last night, and after being hung up on 3 times before I got a "Manager", I was told that irregardless of what their people said, I clicked on the box and was liable for all the charges, which now total $490 dollars.

I would have to be a complete idiot to pay this kind of money for internet use, when I was trying to cancel a $23.00 per month service. Their rep, Matt ID#2672 said that he was the last authority I would talk to and that he reported directly to Steve Case (Stevecase@aol.com) the CEO of AOL. He sounded like he was 22 years old.
Rubbish!

My next contact is my VISA company. My wife and I both thought the pop up window was for telephone services, for there was no mention of internet in the window. I will not be ripped off by these people. They have always been a pain to deal with, and this is their new scam when trying to cancel services. BUYER BEWARE of America On Line
