America Online
Ripoff Spread the Word - free trial becomes automatic credit card billing

Internet & Web

In March I installed American Online's (AOL) "free trial" disk allowing so many free hours, or one free month.in order to take advantage of the deal, I had to give them my debit or credit card number.

Within a couple of weeks, I changed my mind, and called to cancel my account well before the trial period was over. However, when looking at my bank statement recently, I see that they have CHARGED me $28.90 per month for the past 8 months!

I called AOL and tried to reason with them. Yes, they showed no aol account activity for me since March, but no, they would not refund more than a "$47 refund." Despite my pleas with supervisors, they refused to acknowledge, saying they showed no "proof" that I cancelled.

My bank consultant informed me that "AOL does this ALL the time."

I am a poor college student, with 3 kids and Christmas on the way. I am extremely upset that they can get away with ripping off the American public like this. I sent an email complaint to my State Attorney General's office, who forwarded it to the SAG office in AOL's home state of Virginia. Still, I'm sure that I will never see my $240, unjustly charged, ever again.

My message it this: BOYCOTT ALL FREE AOL TRIAL INSTALLATION DISCS: they will rip you off!!
