Eyewear Repair Express
Local or out of town—look elsewhere for competent, ethical service

Health & Medicine

Short version: Having the wrong glasses returned to me over the counter, in filthy condition; discovering that mine had not even been looked at, let alone worked on; audiovisual distraction in a work area which requires close visual attention; overall lack of attention to detail, and failure to keep promises—sound familiar?

The right temple broke off of my eyeglasses. Research showed that Eyewear Repair Express (ERE) was likely to be the fastest and least expensive service available. They are local to me and offer while-you-wait service. I called to confirm all this.

I stopped by and asked for a price and how long it would take. I was quoted $39.95 and about 45 minutes. I said this was great, as I had an errand to run that would take me about that long. The technician took my payment by credit card, and the glasses were written up and left for service.

I returned in less than an hour and asked for my glasses, which had gloss black enamel frames. The glasses I was handed showed what looked like burnished brass under gloss black. I had signed a waiver stating that they might not be returned with their original appearance, so I was willing to accept. I put the glasses on and noted two things: the lenses were filthy, and it wasn't my prescription. They weren't my glasses.

I said so and the tech asked me my name. He said, "Just a moment, " and went to the shop area. As I waited I could hear a television sitcom playing in that area. I have done miniature fabrication and repair work myself. This is not a distraction you need while performing such work.

He returned with my glasses and said that they needed something or other. It's not important what; the point is that he had not looked at my glasses while I was gone, nor had he called me during that time. He stated that he could have them for me "soon". I asked how long and was told 50 minutes to an hour. I don't think I even mentioned that that is what he told me the first time. I simply asked for my glasses back and got a credit on the spot.

I ended up getting the repair done at a local chain called "Fast Fix Jewelry Repair". They have kiosks in major malls in the Atlanta area. I was quoted $45.00 and a 5-7 day turnaround. They had them back in four, and they were beautifully done. They even apologized for not calling to say that they were ready.

I suggest you look elsewhere than ERE for competent, ethical service.
