30 day cancellation notice requrement means you still must pay an additonal month charge

I called to cancel service and was told it had to be in writing (in this day of technology?) and that cancellation would not be made until 30 days later thereby creating an additional month of charges. I was told that although my contract was up I am automatically put on a month to month basis so your contract is never really up.
