Package not delivered, and told wrong information

My first order with Home Depot online has turned into a nightmare! It was a small purchase, 23.00, which I never expected would cause me so much grief. UPS tracking said the package was delivered last Wednesday at 1:55pm. I was not home at the time, but arrived at about 3:00pm. I live in a rural area, and there's not much traffic etc. It is a bit of a walk from the street back to my house. I checked the tracking on my pkg and when it said "Delivered Left at front door" I went outside to both front and back door, even went to my neighbor's to see if it was left there. No pkg. So I called UPS who was not much help, they said Home Depot would have to initiate a trace. I stayed on hold with Home Depot while the service rep checked with UPS. Apparently they told her the same. Now she said I would be credited back the money spent, but that it would take up to 5 business days. I was in need of the items I purchased, so I re-ordered the items, thinking my money would be credited a bit later. Later that evening I got an email saying my order could not be processed, so I called and the first person had put in my expiration date wrong, so the new order was okay after giving the new person my correct date. Now yesterday, after the new order is on its way, I got another call saying that the UPS driver said it was delivered to the front door and I would have to get a police report to dispute the charges. I sat at the sheriff's department (which is 10 miles away) this morning for almost an hour to get the paperwork to fill out. A deputy will be in contact with me. When? I don't know!!! I will have to pay to file this report to add insult to injury!!! I have never had anything stolen here (to my knowledge) and because it had rained the previous night I would think there would be tracks in my driveway, but there were none. I realize Home Depot cannot "make" UPS look for where they left my package, but I cannot believe there's no recourse other than to put the customer out this way. I would never have ordered online if these items were available at the store, but it was online only. Needless to say I don't believe I will ever order anything online again! I noticed that it says "sponsored by Amazon" at the top. I have made many purchases from Amazon and never had a problem. So in closing, I am still in limbo waiting for a deputy to call, out my money, and hoping the pkg which is to be delivered on Monday actually arrives, otherwise it will be the same all over and I will be out TWICE the money! You can bet I will be here watching for him.
