At&t cancellation fees not prorated

In February I purchased a broadband card from AT&T wirless. I just cancelled it with 5 months left in a two year contract.
I now understand in May AT&T decided to be nice to there customers and prorate there cancellation fees.
I am not included in that because they made the decision AFTER my contract was in full swing. Doesn't make sense to me!!!
