Costy stereo fails after brief warranty

Electronics and household app.
JVC's most expensive shelf stereo — Model FS-7000 ($500.00 at time of purchase) — failed twice within 14 months after 1-year warranty.
Failure was product fault, not misuse — fluorescent display faded out first, CD player stopped working a couple of months later.
JVC's responses: At my cost, take or ship system to its Cerritos California facility for a repair estimate. JVC would not extend the warranty. Cerritos facility is over 30 miles from my LA home.
An "authorized service facility" did give me a phone estimate of several hundred dollars for parts alone.
So much for JVC.
