Cell Phones dies 2 weeks past warranty. Still committed to plan and now need to spend hundreds to replace

I got a Nokia cell phone when the Verizon plan I am part of, was renewed for 2 years. Less tha 2 weeks after the warranty expired, my phone permanentlt died. Verizon said the phone is shot. They offered no discounts or help with a replacement. I have to remain with the plan and a phone will cost me at least $200.00. There is no help in situations like mine. The phone is a Nokia and I did nothing wrong for it to stop working. It won't dial calls. Even if the original phone was free, I'm stuck in a plan with no phone. Are they made to last onle till the warranty runs out?
