Ripoff broke contract by not having service in area needed, now they want fees for stopping service early

I had Cingular Wireless because my father was ill. He lived in Whitehall, NY and I lived in Glens Falls, NY (30 miles away). I purchased the phones so we could stay in touch because he was dying and I needed to be able to have him reach me while I was out or at work. I called Cingular several times and visited 3 Cingular stores in my area and still no help. "They couldn't help it if I couldn't get service in his town. Well. After many attempts to have them solve the problem, I asked to upgrade. Maybe the cheap free phones weren't good enough to pick up service in that area.
They told me I didn't have my phones for 2 yrs. And I couldn't upgrade unless I wanted to "buy" the expensive phones on my own. I refused to spend more money and told them I canceled my contract. They are now sueing me for over $1500 in early cancelation fees. I think they broke their own contract by not servicing my area and leading me to believe they did. They said there is no reports in my file that say I ever tried to contact them or went to any stores. They say I refused to upgrade at a discount price and I should pay them the amount owed. I am not paying!!! They were useless and there is no way I am paying for service I didn't get.
