Best Buy
Deceptive Advertising Selling and Rebate Ripoff Practices

Electronics and household app.

In the past year we have spent over $5000 at Best Buy. On Nov. 12,04 we were sent from Store #58 to Store #54 when we were told that they had no more packages of the model included in their rebate offer. They shelved the three computers of the wrong model and sent us to buy the correct rebate model at Store #54.

At Store #54 we found the right model in stock and purchased 3 packages. Each rebate included 3 seperate forms to fill out and send off, including original UPCs, receipts and photocopies. This amounted to 9 forms to complete and 9 envelopes to address. Daunted by the task, we hurriedly filled out the forms and sent them away.

Several months later when it was too late to return the computers, we received ONE rebate package and notification that the offer was one per household only. At no point in our transactions, at either store, were we made aware of the restriction prior to our purchase. When we specifically asked for the rebate model and were sent to another store to purchase the three computers there, staff failed to warn us of the restriction. Nothing on the display information noting the rebate indicated such a restriction. According to the supervisor I phoned at 1-888-BEST-BUY today, the information was in the Terms and Conditions on the Rebate Receipt which is received AFTER purchase.

When we purchased these computers we were expecting the usual convenience, pricing and service we have received from Best Buy in the past. We did not expect these deceptive advertising and selling practices from a company we had grown to trust.

When I first called a week ago I was told-to my surprise-that my rebates would be sent out and I should receive them shortly. Today when I called I was told that no rebates would never be sent. While speaking to the manager I was treated harshly and told that the BBB could do nothing to help me. He told me that employees are not trained to know Best Buy's rebate terms and conditions. Despite their product expertise they are not trained on important rebate terms and conditions. It seems terribly convenient for Best Buy to ensure that there is no clear information made available to the customer BEFORE purchasing their rebated products.
