Ripoff sneaky charge - membership fee we didn't approve

A $199.95 suddenly showed up on my husband's bank account, charged to MWI*Homeworks Plus through a credit/debit card. We had no idea what it was for, so I searched the net to see what he might have bought.

The first hit was for windows and doors at Lowes. The next 5 hits were "ripoff" reports from this website! I read them, one had a number included in the text, so I called the company. I reached an automated phone line that gave 2 selections, neither of which I wanted. So... I hit the 0, no answer, so I hit the * key. I got a voice!!!

The lady told me that their records showed that my husband had signed up for a trial membership about a year ago, when he purchased something from an infomercial, and the trial had expired, that the charge was a membership fee.

I informed her that my husband was definitely not aware of any membership, we had never used their services, and wanted our account refunded and the membership cancelled. She countered with, "but we save you over 20% at..." before she got any further I repeated that they were to cancel the membership and refund the account. She then said she'd like to send me a rebate coupon, and all we had to do was buy something at one of the advertised stores, send in the receipt and the rebate coupon, and we would get $60. I stated I didn't care what she sent as long as our bank account was not affected at any time, and that, again, she was to cancel our membership and refund the account, or did I have to involve a lawyer.

She replied the membership would be cancelled, the refund would be posted within 2 business days, her name was Rachel, and a confirmation number.

We'll wait 2 business days and ensure the amount is refunded. If not, we will contact the bank with the information we know, and inform them of the scam.

Be aware!!! Just as you need to read the fine print, you need to listen carefully to salesman - even if you called them! And take quick action - contact the company right away. Last, but not least, be FIRM!!!:)

P.S. This is the second time I've hit the rip-off website on a search, and both times it's helped me ensure I'm NOT ripped off! THANK YOU SO MUCH for having this site!!!
