Education & Science

Let me first say that I had outstanding service with Verizon prior to this minute, but after the news I received today I would not recommend them to my worst enemy.

I recently moved to Sprint due to that fact that the two people I talk to the most are on sprint and I can get unlimited calls to them on the sprint network. I knew I was nearing the end of my Verizon contract and so I was not too concerned about it (I had just paid the July bill). However I just received a bill for early termination fees of over $300. Now my wife and I share one plan, two lines. Verizon is saying that the early termination fee is a per line charge, however I have looked at the agreement, and it says no such thing;

"3. Early termination change. You acknowledge that damages to us for breach of this commitment are difficult, if not impossible, to determine. THEREFORE, IF YOU CANCEL SERVICE OR IF WE TERMINATE THIS AGREEMENT UNDER THE DEFAULT PROVISIONS OF SECTION 8 PRIOR TO THE COMPLETION OF THE TERM, YOU WILL PAY AS LIQUIDATED DAMAGES, AND NOT AS A PENALTY, AN EARLY TERMINATION CHARGE OF $175.00 for contract terms 2 years and under and $300 for contract terms greater than 2 years.

This reads to me that the termination fee is tied to the contract, of which there is only one. When I called the first time I was told that my service was activated in August of which I knew could not be correct. After checking through my bank records I saw online payments as far back as February. Upon calling back I talked with another gentleman who after trying unsuccessfully to reach my wife (her name is on the contract) to get permission for me to get account information (no problem with the previous rep), broke down and told me service was activated on September of which I have not confirmed as of yet. Even if this was true then it means I was only liable for two more months of service, which I would be happy to pay, however I was informed that this is not their policy and even if it was 1 day (1 DAY???) before the contract expired I would still be liable for the fees. At this point in time I am so furious I am willing to give the money to a Lawyer to hash it out just out of spite. I can show nearly 2 years of records in which I always paid my bill in full and very rarely came anywhere close to using all my minutes, and this is how they repay my diligence. I would like someone to tell me how this is fair business practice.
