Ripoff phone / internet scam through your local phone service

While viewing the details of our most recent telephone bill (April), I came across a charge from "American Voice Link" in the amount of $8.78. My bill had it listed under "Enhanced billing 900 service which we also had never heard of.
A call to my local telephone company said that the charge is for accessing a "pay to view" website and should have had a warning that we had to agree to pay a fee to continue into a website. If a website ever said we had to pay to enter it, we would NOT go there! (Aren't we all paying enough for internet as it is?) There is NO way we accrued this charge!!!
We called the 1-888-302-3724 number to talk to the "Enhanced billing 900 service" and they said there's really nothing they can do. We also tried the number listed for American Voice Link and it is disconnected!
Folks... Read your telephone bills! These charges are apparently making the rounds in March and April phone bills for calls as far back as December. Check your bills! Don't get scammed!
