Le Chef Culinary School
Culinary schools are a rip off

Education & Science

My husband attended a culinary school in 1993 called Le Chef in Austin Texas. Tuition was around $13,000 for a year if I remember right.

He was an electrician by trade but always had a love of cooking.
We were expecting our first child during the time of his schooling.
He would work during the day and then attend school at night.
It wasn't long before I started to hear of how the teachers rushed the students through the meal classes. Everyone had only a certain amount of time to complete the meals.

Then the students were told they would have to start looking for part time work at a restaurant. He realized that he could not afford to quit his job and take one making $8 an hour. He found out that he made more money than the instructors.
It was around the 6 month of my pregnancy when I was taken to the hospital for contractions. The family had to contact the school to get a hold of him.

He left class to go to the hospital.
I stayed overnight but was released the next day and he was able to return to class.
Right before class started, the teacher walked up to him and told him he needed to get his priorities right. That was enough for him.
He left the school in the first six months.

I always think of this when I see all the commercials for these place, making people believe they will be famous chefs for just going to the school.
Little do they know, anyone can get a job in a restaurant if you're good enough. Going to a culinary school is not going to guarantee you a job or a certain wage.
