Gave me debt instead of an education

Education & Science

There are a great many people online that are struggling with this so called university's misleading sales tactics and alot of them are trying to file class suits. I figured with all of the research I have done online, it would be better to contact the Department of Education since you have dealt with them in the past. I have put this off for a few years (3 years), so not every detail is fresh in my memory. A year after high school, working two jobs, I decided that online college would be better for me because it is more flexible time-wise as opposed to attending school physically.
Unfortunately, I threw out any document that would support my situation against University of Phoenix because I felt like I was the one who had made a bad decision. I blamed myself for being so stupid as to let this college take advantage of my lack of knowledge when it came to enrolling into new schools and how the financial aide program works. I did however, ask if the courses that I would be taking would transfer to a college within my state and I was assured by a UoP counselor that they would. I was also told that I would receive pell grants since I was enrolling in my name and not under my fathers. This school used me for money, because none of these courses transferred to a community college near me and my community college wouldn't grant me financial aide for reasons I still don't understand. I have not been able to get a college education since I went to the University of Phoenix and I have tried but I can not afford to pay out of pocket. I dreamed of being able to have a profession by now, and they messed that up for me.
I attended the college for a year and a half, and I had great grades. I may have missed a few assignments since my dad's computer wasn't working up to par at one point in time near my last year of being at UoP. I contacted my counselor requesting that he not enroll me in the next semester because the job I had been working at, cut my hours significantly, allowing me to attend a college physically in my state. After the counselor tried to talk me out of transferring, he assured me that he would transfer my files to which ever school (Delaware Technical community college or Delaware State University) and that he would make sure I wouldn't be enrolled in the next semester. Well, a week later I logged into my University of Phoenix Online account and noticed I had e-mails from teachers saying I forgot assignments. Then there were e-mails from teachers asking if I had dropped out. I contacted the UoP online and they apologized (of course) and I made sure to ask them if I would be paying for these courses that I specifically told them not to enroll me in and they said no, since I wasn't supposed to be enrolled anyway.
A few months later, I went to Delaware Technical and Community College to take a placement test and was going to schedule my SAT testing with Delaware State University. While at DelTech, I was told I wouldn't be granted financial aide because I owe too much in loans to another school. I was confused and told that I would have to pay out of pocket, and certainly wouldn't be able to living alone and working as a waitress and casual seasonal with minimum hours. So, I left crying and kept receiving bills in the mail from Sallie Mae and American Student Assistance owing $6000 for what? An Education? What Education? I had nothing to show for this $6000 I owe. That's an enormous waste of money, especially for someone like me who can barely afford the $150 monthly payments. Nothing from University of Phoenix Online would transfer and I certainly wasn't getting hired because of what courses I had taken there or because I had attended at all.
I feel as if they cheated me to make money off me. They used me because they knew they could get away with it. Now I'm stuck paying these loans monthly and can barely afford them, and I feel hopeless as to ever being able to have an actual career. I have wasted 4 years working dead end jobs to pay for college courses that have done nothing to benefit me. I am almost terrified to ever get involved with another college again after this experience. I accept the consequences of not researching this online college before enrolling and for not contacting the Department of Education sooner. I am so disgruntled by this and can't believe that anyone, especially a supposedly accredited, legitimate and popular college such as the University of Phoenix, would be so cruel as to use certain people as a sales opportunity and to screw up their lives for years after they've un-enrolled.

It would be such a relief to have help from someone who knows how to deal with my situation. Hopefully, one day I will be able to actually attend a college and know exactly what it is I'm paying for and be happy to put my money towards something that is actually a benefit to me as opposed to a burden.
