Charter One Bank
The business that doesnt give a dam

I worked for Charter One since they entered the upstate NY market 5 years ago. I quit last year because I couldn't take any more customers coming to me in tears because Charter One bounced a check, which cacused a chain reaction and caused several more checks to bounce and the end result: My customer's paycheck has been eaten up in bank fees (literally!) and now my customer can't pay their rent or buy groceries.
This bank has all of its customers rated; employees are instructed to give as little time and attention to the lower tiers as possible because they cost the bank money. This is also true when you call customer support and punch your account number. The computer gives preference to higher ranked customers; others will have a longer wait.
Their TOTALLY FREE CHECKING is in fact a rip-off. There are so many ways they can charge you and they're all listed in a 50 pager disclosure statement that they give you when you open the account. They bank (excuse the pun!) on you not reading this. Then when you complain to an employee all they do is tell you "well, it says you get charged for that right here on page 38, paragraph 4". By the way, internally TOTALLY FREE CHECKING is called FEE CHECKING.
As an employee, if we reversed a charge for a customer we would get a call from a regional manager wanting a detailed explanation as to why we did such an attrocity.
I left in good standing; I was a top performer but I morales wouldn't let me do it any more. Stay as far way from this bank as possible!
