I had a few pieces of scrap gold jewelry laying around and decided that I would sell it. I saw on the internet where you could send your gold by fedex to a company called Goldpaq. They made it very convienient to send in my scrap gold. All I had to do was print off a fedex label and drop it in the fedex box. They sent me an email with the tracking number so I could feel assured that the gold would reach them. I tracked the package and it arrived on a Friday afternoon around 5:00 and by 5:30 on Friday they had cut a check.
I called them on Monday and asked how much the check was for and they told me it was for $24.00. I told them that I felt that my gold was worth more than $100 and they said they would have someone re-appraise the jewelry and give me a call. Of course that call never came. I sent them an email and of course I didn't receive a response. They have a return policy that says that they will send your items back if you return the check within 10 days. Today, 7 full days after the check was dated, I received a check for $24.00.
By the time I got home from work to open my mail the post office was closed. There is no chance that when I mail my check back to them on Saturday that they will have received it by Monday and therefore it is impossible for me to make the return within that 10 day window. I suspect they sat on the check they issued on Friday until Tuesday to make sure that I couldn't make the cut-off within 10 days.
My advice to anyone selling scrap gold is to take it to your local jewler or coin dealer and get an appraisal that will allow you to accept or reject. This company makes it way too easy to get the gold out of your hands and into theirs and gives you little choice but to just take whatever is offered.
