Alliance One
Ripoff A foolish attempt on the part of an equally foolish company

Education & Science

Zipped home for a quick lunch-break and I get a phone call... The number is recognizable at this point because it's the same number I'm seeing on my caller ID 5 times a day for the last week! 866-811-5719. I answer, say hi, they ask for my wife (name withheld). I ask who it is andwhat it is regarding, as is my custom.

The representative identifies himself as John with Alliance One and says, "Gee you ask a lot of questions! Tell you what, I'll just call back tomorrow morning." I say, "Don't bother." and hang up.

Out of curiosity I call the number back, and sure enough the same guy answers the phone saying "Alliance One!", and I promptly hang up.intrigued, I go back to work and do a web search with just the name "Alliance One" and usacomplaints.com shows the name with relevancy of abotu 95% on google's search engine. So now I'm really curious!

I read about 5 articles, call the number back and a gentleman identifying himself as Roger answers the phone. I tell him that I'd like his organization to stop calling my house, he responds by asking my phone number. No harm there, really, I give it to him. He says they're looking for (my wife's name) but they can't release any information to me.

So then I test the waters..."I'm her husband." "OH! Ok, then we're calling to collect a debt from Capital One credit cards (my wife never had one of those, for the record)".

Here's the first point that makes me know this is fraudulent: Any collection agency with sensitive financial information on anyone is required by law to verify the identity of any public or private entity that requests that information before releasing it in part or in entirety. He didn't even ask my name. I could have been any John Q and they'd have just given me the amount owed, account number, and anything else I wanted to know.

Rank amateurs.

So I ask him if he's ever heard of usacomplaints.com, inform him that there are over 15 entries on the web site regarding people that they've fleeced, and told him that if the calls didn't stop—He cuts me off saying "Oh yah, oh really, what are you going to do?" Very unprofessional for a debt collection company... The second point that makes me know this is fraudulent. No reputable debt collector will at any point become rude or abusive like that on the phone—I know, I've dealt with the worst of the bunch... Student Loan Collectors.
