Major scam artist - buyer beware! Ripoff

This company needs to be shut down and I am going to do everything in my power to make sure what has happened to me does not happen to another innocent consumer. "Helping Hands" aka "SmoothMove" are scam artist. My husband contracted their services to move us from Cheltenham, MD to Grayson, GA. Everything appeared easy enough, my husband met with a representative who gave us an esitmate of items we had in two large public storage facilities. Everything was set for pick up on 1-27-07 for delivery on 1-29-07. Well, just as was the case with the other consumer, they showed 2-3 hours late. We later learned after we had already arrived in GA that are items were broken up in 2 separate shipments. On 1-29-07 we heard no word from and after repeated phone calls and voice mail messages they finally contacted my husband to inform him that the items would be on the road the next day, the next day came and the dispatcher (Guy) who is part owner indicated the truck was on the road but had broken down in Petersburg, VA. The truck did not arrive util 7:45 that evening. The truck was an indentified small loading truck that leaked oil all on our driveway and had no automatic loading. They driver "Jay" hired day laborers with no experience moving to unload the truck. They had absoloutely no idea what they were doing, were frustrated with Jay and his lack of direction with unloading the items. During unloading I began to notice many of my major furniture pieces were broken, scratched (dining room chair, 2 table stands, the list go one). I was absolutely horrified at the condition of these items. Jay also demanded to paid the balance in full during the middle of unloading the items. We informed Jay that they would receive the remaining balance when we received all of our household goods. He was adamant about it and eventually left indicating we would not recieve our items unless we paid them in full. They next day the company contacted my husband and indicated instead of the balance in full they wanted us to pay $1200, when we refused again they indicated $1000. Desparate to have this issue resolved my husband sent the money to my mother-in-law to have her hand deliver to their offices. My mother-in-law on Friday, February 2, went to their corporate office which she reported was a small rinky-dink office in Hanover. She informed Guy that it was imperative that are items be shipped the next day. He assured her that they would be on the road at 9:00 am. Well you could of guess, that the next day our furniture was not enroute to be delivered. I called, my husband called, and again we got the run around. Frustrated regarding the situation I called Guy to inquire about filing a claim for the broken furniture and to make arrangements to pick up the furniture ourselves. Guy asked me why I did not want them to deliver the items. I told them at this point I had no confidence that they would get the items on the road and just wanted to get them and move on from this situation. He became angry and indicated there would be additional fees. I asked why would there be additional fees when they would not be completing the move of load 2. I reminded him that we were unaware that they were breaking up our shipment in the first place and that we had been more than patient during this whole ordeal. Needless to say there was no resolution on this matter and I will proceed with contacting an attorney and the police. This company uses inappropriate business tactics to extort money from consumers and are not truthful or fair in their business practices.
