Axia College
Dishonest financial aid office, was told on phone eligible for pell grant, yet have not received award letter ripoff

Education & Science

I have been attending Axia College Online/UOP since September 25. I transferred from another school so I had funds available through Sallie Mae before I began Axia. I completed all of my financial aid paperwork 1 week before classes started.

I didn't hear from the financial aid officer until I contacted call her three weeks later and she told me that she needed me to fax my 2004 and 2005 tax returns. I let another 3 weeks go past then I call again to find out why I havent received an award letter because I knew that I was eligible to receive a pell grant because of my student aid report. The financial aid officer tells me that I didnt have enough to cover classes and that I would have to pay some out of pocket.

Then she goes, "Wait a minute, I looked at the computer wrong, it looks like you are eligible for a pell grant!" She advised that me then that I should receive a letter in the mail within a couple of weeks. The only thing I received was an invoice for my 2 classes which I will be done with in 2 weeks and a letter from Sallie Mae stating that I am scheduled for repayment of my stafford loans Feb 07.

I called her again, left messages, sent emails, didnt hear anything. I waited another week, then called my academic counselor, she transferred me to the financial aid officer. I asked her why I haven't received an award letter yet and why Sallie Mae doesnt know that I am in school. She told me I needed to contact Sallie Mae to get a in school deferrment. I asked her why do I need to do that if they are supposed to be receiving the remaining of my funds from them. She said my paperwork is still being processed by the Department of Education and it can take up to 3 months for my funds to get certified.

I told her I never of heard of it taking that long. Then she pretends that she is looking at something on her computer and says she received something from the Dept of Education saying that they needed income information from my Husband which I am seperated from. I told her I completed my Fafsa months ago, why would they just now request his information if I indicated on my report that I am seperated. She told me that I must have made a mistake when completing it and that she need to send me an authoization form to make corrections, then fax it back.

I called U.S. Department of Education they indicated to me that my fafsa had been processed already and I had to contact my financial aid officer as to when I would receive and award letter because that's who it is coming from. That is when I came accross this website and realized that I am not the only one having problems with this school. I am afraid to withdraw because I will owe the school money and I don't know who else to call for assistance.
