Asset Acceptance
Ripoff, changing amount owed

I'm in need of some guidance with this company. Two years ago when trying to buy a home the company Asset Acceptance appeared on my credit report from an old loan for a vehicle. Upon contact with them I was told that they now owned this account and that they would need payment to get it off of my credit report. Not knowing any better I spoke with them on the phone and made the payment that they stated they needed.
Fast forward to two years later and I am still having issues with them. They have now garnished my ex-husbands wages on and off for the last two years, are very rude to talk to, and when I requested a copy of the account activity it didn't all add up.
I'm not sure that I can find the original amount that the account was, and I'm also afraid that now that they have been receiving "payments" that there is nothing I can do to try to fix the discrepancy. I need to know what my obligations are to them regarding this matter, and also what theirs is to me.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
