Ripoff! Deceptive telemarketing scheme

In February of this year, a representative of Jcom Skymedia contacted me by phone to ask if we would be purchasing this year's American Business References guide. The representative informed me that our association has always purchased and been listed in this guide (this is my first year as clerk). He further informed me that this service would cost three fifty-nine. I asked if he meant $3.59 or $359. He specifically stated $3.59.

Two weeks later, the guide arrived in the mail. The bill was to arrive separately. I could not find our company listed anywhere in the guide. It was printed on newsprint and was cheaply bound. I had the opportunity to speak with the former clerk, and she informed me that while in the past the association has been solicited to purchase the guide, it never has done so. I was not worried as I had been told the price would be only $3.59.

Today the bill arrived via post. It came to $359.95 plus $19.95 shipping and handling. The invoice specifically reads Includes Company Listing, which as I have noted is in fact false. The invoice also states that the guide cannot be returned without authorization, and that it must be shipped in its original packaging (which was simply a box with the guide and nothing else). I no longer have the packaging, but I intend to contact Jcom tomorrow during business hours.

Clearly this is a scam, and they should be listed in your directory to alert other consumers.
