HP's Lack of Customer Service - Desktop Support and Warranty

HP simply has no customer service without paying a fee. How is it that Costco will gladly help me with an HP product, but HP will not? Amazing how one company demonstrates true commitment to customer service while the other simply pays it lip service. My issue was fairly simple in that the drivers from the HP website were not downloading properly to my printer. Might have required a few minutes to fix, but HP would not do this without a fee. I don't understand how a company can talk customer service and tout great products while at the same time denying help to its customers. I have purchased my last HP product.
