United Air Comfort
Inc., & United Restoration Installed AC unit w / incorrect lineset size, condensor overheated & burned. Called for service Co wanted $450 for their error

United Air Comfort, Inc. Was called for an air conditioning check-up from an advertisement in Sunday LA Times. Upon inspection they told us that our current unit was functioning marginally and would be going out soon. They suggested we upgrade to a 4 ton unit to which we agreed and set a date for installation. They did not meet that date or the two additional dates that were to follow.

They finally installed the unit 2 1/2 weeks later. The new system worked marginally and kept causing the circuit breaker to pop. They suggest that we install a larger circuit breaker. We did install a larger circuit breaker and the unit continued to have the same problems. When contacting the company about the poor performance of the unit we were told that we probably needed a larger return duct.

When we called for someone to come out to give us an estimate on a larger return duct no one ever showed up or called us back.By then, the summer was over and we did not need the AC. This summer when the temperature reach triple digits we turned on the AC and nothing but hot air came out. We attempted to call the local number which was disconnected, so we called the toll free number in Florida.

Someone showed up two days later to inspect our system. They told us and put in writing that the compressor was burned out as a result of a improper lineset. He stated that when the unit was installed it should have had a larger lineset installed because the system had been upgraded from a 3 ton to a 4 ton unit. As a result the compressor was getting a restricted flow which caused it to burn out. He set an appointment to repair the unit two day later. On the repair date we received a phone call saying they would not be able to make it because they had to go to the City of Industry to pick up the part. The next day two repairman showed up and removed the burned condenser.

They then left to go pick up the new condenser which we had been told was picked up the day before. When they returned 2 hours later they did not have the condenser and informed us that it would be an additional $450.00 to run a new lineset. This contradicted the repair order that we had been given and signed 3 days previously. There was no mention of any additional cost as the system was still under warranty and that it had been their error that the lineset was not upgraded at the time of the installation.

Upon hearing this we demanded to speak to a supervisor. The repairman called his supervisor and he told us that he had spoken to Corporate Headquarters and this direction had come from them. We informed him that we had no intention of paying any additional costs for their mistakes. We informed him that we were going to file a complaint with the State Contractors License Board and the Better Business Bureau, if they did not fulfill the conditions of the contract.

He then offered to split the cost with us and we refused. His employee then got on the phone and told him that it would be a very easy change because it was such a short distance. They are now scheduled to return in three days (7/20/04) to complete the repairs for no additional cost. We will keep you updated. We feel that we will not see these people again.
