John Lewis Builders padding hours & supplies (overcharging)

We hired Lewis Builders to do an hourly job, putting 5 pieces of drywall on a basement ceiling. They worked so slowly the first day that we asked them not to come back. We had previously hired them for another job, and they had worked fairly quickly so we were surprised at the snail's pace... Lots of phone calls and breaks while they were "working." They sent us a bill for $4000, claiming they had worked 3 days instead of 1. We were astonished. When we called them on this, they sent us a new bill for $1600. This bill still padded the hours by about 5 hours and charged us for supplies they never used. For example, they charged us for enough drywall screws for an entire house, when we never got them and went to the store to get our own to finish the job after we fired them.

They are incapable of providing accurate billing. They should say upfront, hey, we are going to charge you for more hours than we work, then let the consumer decide if they want to do business with them.

We previously had them do work for us but the 2 workers we liked are no longer with the company, probably not a coincidence.

They have admitted not to using all the drywall screws and they offered to "bring us a box of drywall screws." Why not take them off the bill instead of bringing us drywall screws we no longer need? They have denied padding their hours and imply that I am lying about their taking copious breaks and being on the phone all day. Their excuse was "sometimes construction runs into delays"... Putting 5 pieces of drywall is not something that is complicated. The only reason my husband didn't do it himself was because it was too heavy to hold on the ceiling as a 1 person job.
