Lawn mower purchase

Bought a lawnmower and only got it started 3 times would not stay running. 25 min. Pulling the starter rope on a 61 year man is a rough way to get the lawn mowed. Took it back to the store to trade it in for another mower and the hardware manager told me that it had gas put in it and they don't take em back if gas was put in the machine. I find it impossible to see if the machine works if you can't put gas in it. Now heres the real kicker on the mower there is a sticker from another repair shop on the deck. So that means somebody bought it took it home and it didn't work I wonder if he too add gas to make it run? Do you suppose he worked on it with no gas in it? When I got home I called the store back and asked to speak with the store manager (brad) told me the same gas story and didn't really seem too interested in what I had to say.
