Lock Up Your Valuables

I contracted with Empire Today Carpets and discovered about $25,000 in jewelry was missing from a cabinet they moved during installation. I filed a police report, and of course the installer denied his crew took anything. Without video surveillance there was nothing the police could do.

In attempting to resolve this with Empire, I hired a lawyer who sent a letter and I also spoke to several Empire administrators who gave me the run around for months. They absolved themselves of any responsibility based on the finding of the police investigation, and suggested that, since they use sub-contractors, they were not responsible.

You might assume Empire is sending their own employees to install the carpet. Not true. Many of them are day workers who are hired by sub-contactors, and Empire simply denies any responsibility for their actions.

Be careful of who you let into your home and know exactly who is responsible if things go wrong. Hide or lock up all your valuables, and have a video camera or two recording the actions of the workers since there is really no other way to prove what happened.
