Charles Hepner Ask for $1,000 credit card charge "in order to get started"

Saw their ad on TV - "call 800-240-2341 to see if you qualify to have your mortgage loan modified". The ad (and the company name) leads one to believe this is a government agency. I called them, gave them all the information they wanted about mortgage balance, payments for mortgage, car, credit cards, etc; and income level. Sounded pretty legit.

Then they said they charge $2995 to renegotiate the terms of the first mortgage, and another $695 to renegotiate the second. I asked what guarantees they'd give that they'll be successful. I was assured there was a guarantee. I asked that they send a contract that details their guarantee. They said that in order to do that, they needed to process a $1,000 credit card charge BEFORE sending me a contract.

I asked if they really thought people were that stupid. The guy responds that he has 100 phone calls to return, with people who were ready to give him their credit card number. I suggested he quit wasting time with me and start calling them.

SERIOUSLY - Do NOT work with these guys. I know there are a lot of people who are in desperate straits with their home/mortgage payment. But no legitimate service would suggest that you give them money before sending a contract specifying their services and any performance guarantees.
