They sell you an insurance policy in case of disabilty then its not any good

I purchased some furniture and didn't realize that a twenty dollar charge was added to my monthly bill for a disability insurance. Until I went into the store to pay my monthly bill in a
wheel chair.
The sympathetic secretary told me as I was paying my bill that I had insurance and the bill would be paid as long as I was disabled. I filled out a form and she said it would be taken care of. I was so relieved.
One year later I get a call from their collection department and they want to know why I have not paid my bill in a year. I explained that the girl at the store had me fill out a form and said I was covered under a disability insurance that I paid each month and since I had not received my usual statements and only some emails stating that payments had been made I didnt realize I owed them any thing at that time.
Long story short, it was a scam and they demanded payment in full. And they had all of my personal medical history as that was part of getting the payments made. The young lady that gave me that information of course no longer works there and they tacked on over 500 dollars in late fees. Even though I have paid them in full my credit is completely ruined because of this
